Choose To Be Intelligent

According to the experts, you are born with a certain IQ, or intelligence quotient, and this cannot be improved upon. IQ is different from using your brain to its best advantage and there are a few things you can do to tune up the grey matter.

Breathing deeply means that your body relaxes, allowing it to absorb more oxygen. When the brain gets more oxygen, it is able to function better. Taking deep breaths also wakes you up and makes you feel more alert. If you have low levels of oxygen in the brain, it does not work as well as it could. Breathing through your nose is a good idea because it is harder to breathe shallowly this way.

Meditation is a good way to improve brain power because it encourages deep breathing and encourages you to relax. Relaxation encourages deep breathing and vice versa. This means you can easily focus on the task at hand.

Regular exercise and a good posture can also help you to increase your brain power. You can do an experiment to prove this works. Try to solve a math problem while you are slouching on the sofa and then sit up straight and try again. When your body feels comfortable, your brain follows.

Regular exercise is important and can be anything from a brisk walk to some swimming or light jogging. You do not need to pump iron at the gym for hours every day or do anything more strenuous than you are comfortable with. You just need to get some blood flowing to your brain and exercise takes care of that.

Another important factor is sleep, which is very beneficial for the brain and mind. Sleep quality is as important as sleep quantity. Different people require different amounts of sleep depending on age and other factors, but everyone needs a good quality of sleep. If you are well rested, it means your brain is more refreshed and alert upon waking and will perform better.

Another way of increasing your concentration levels and memory is drinking tea. Herbal supplements such as gingko have been used for many years to increase the blood flow to the brain. The effect is quick like when you drink coffee but consumers do not experience long term adverse effects like with coffee. Sniffing the herb rosemary might do the trick too. Some people swear this perks them up.

If you have a large intake of sugar and carbohydrates, this can make you sluggish and slow down your thought processes. This is because of insulin. If you need all your brain power, for example if you have to sit an exam or attend an important meeting, give potatoes and other carbohydrates, and sugar, a miss.

Listening to classical music has been found by researchers to improve a child's IQ. Children who are used to hearing classical music show a superior ability to solve puzzles and score higher in spatial reasoning intelligence tests.

Writing is good for the brain too because it exercises your creativity and improves your analytical thinking. Keeping a diary, an idea journal or writing some short stories or poetry will boost your intelligence and can also be fun.

Conversation keeps your mind sharp, especially when you are explaining things. This improves your own understanding of the matter. Debates are good exercise for the brain but try to remain objective. When you take an argument further just to win it that is when ego takes over and the mind steps back.

One of the best things to enhance your IQ is to have faith in the fact that you are clever. Positive thinking is great and brings impressive results. Remember all the times you have shown your intelligence or been creative and you will re-experience them.

Why High IQ Level is not a Gauge to Success in Life

On the basis of a test, a person’s intellectual level represented by a number determines his/her IQ level. The higher the number, the more intelligent the person is. Does high intellect guarantee success in life?

At first glance, most would believe so. This belief is borne on the perception that many of the world’s great names of successful individuals have been gifted with high IQ or intellect. There is no denial, although not all monetary or personal success attributed to fame are products of intellectual minds. Various other factors contribute to the success of an intellectual person. These factors also apply to individuals with average intellect. Some successes are triggered by factors that hardly have anything to do with intellect; like opportunity, timing, perseverance, and sheer hard work. More than intellect, devotion or love for one’s work is vital to success. When love is poured into one’s work, the hardships that go with it somehow diminish and make difficulties endurable.

In the same context, not all intellectually gifted individuals reach the pinnacle of success. Some hardly touch the base. One of the irony of a highly intellectual individual with reference to success is the pressure he or she feels from within. The people around, especially those who know about the individual being highly intellectual, expect success out of him or her. The pressure is stronger when the individual is compelled of the expectation. Somehow, this kind of forceful pressure runs contrary to the flow of achieving the success aimed for. The push creates anxiety.

While perseverance is somewhat a kind of pressure, we have to distinguish the difference between the two. Perseverance is pressure exerted on one’s self, not by external forces. Perseverance is pressure that leans towards positive action and optimism. The commitment is to self, not to others.

It may be worthwhile to note that the intelligence of a person can be very variable. An intelligent person can come up with a myriad of ideas. Life does not offer any guarantee of success and neither does ideas, no matter how numerous they are. However, even a single simple idea becomes golden if it aptly fits into the possibility of attaining success that may change one’s life; turning it around completely from nothing to something.

At times, ideas can do funny things to one’s life. The more a person forcibly thinks to come up with an idea to succeed in life, the more the idea seems to play the role of the unreachable star. There are instances a person hardly apply any force whatsoever and still comes up with an idea or a formula for success. Ideas come by chance. A person may chance by a place, saw something insignificant (but significant to the person), and an idea pops up. And this hardly has bearing to intelligence, if ever. Intelligence and ideas are loosely interrelated. One doesn’t need to be an above average or intelligent person to come up with great ideas and vice versa.

The notion that intelligence cannot be acquired is wrong. Neither is intelligence in a person fixed. Intelligence can be equated to building one’s physique, for instance. How does one develop a muscular body? The gym can help. A body building equipment can help. But the main component to a muscular body is continuous exercise and repeated patterns of toning the muscles. Nobody gets a muscular body overnight. It takes time.

The same thing is true with a boxer. It takes practice to be good in boxing. And this is true with just about any kind of sports activity. Hard work, perseverance, and commitment to an endeavor are some key components to sports and success in life. Intelligence is just part of success in life. Intelligence alone does not guarantee success.

Simply, success is like a dish; many ingredients contributed to the taste. With success, intelligence is one of them but it is not the only one. And if intelligence is lacking, it can be developed. Resourcefulness and perseverance are the other components. More importantly, the love for work should be present.

Do You Know Your Intelligence Quotient?

What exactly is an Intelligence Quotient? It’s a score derived from a set of standardized tests that scientists have developed to try and accurately measure a person’s cognitive abilities, in relation to others in their own age group. It’s usually used in addition to others related to academic success.

In 1974, David Wechsler developed the WISC-III test. In 2003, a revised version was released called WISC-IV. Nowadays, you can even take online IQ tests. While they’re popular and fun, they are not expert certified, nor are they as long as the traditional tests, as well as lacking the usual time limit.

The average IQ score is 100, so if your score happens to be 100, it means that half of the population scores higher than you, and half scores lower than you. According to studies, 50% of people have scores between 90 and 110, 2.5% of people are very superior in intelligence, that is, they have a score over 130. 2.5% of people are mentally deficient and possess a score of under 70, while .5% of people are near genius, possessing a score of over 140.

The types of problems covered in the standard IQ test are:

Verbal

Mathematical

Spatial

Logic

Pattern Recognition

Visualization

Classification

Verbal: The verbal part of the test also encompasses reading, writing, and communicating with words and is mainly a test of your vocabulary, your ability to learn verbal material, as well as your reasoning and problem solving abilities.

Mathematical: The mathematical section of the IQ test measures your ability to reason and do basic mathematical computations. It also measures your understanding of geometric shapes and equations. Isn’t it amazing how often you are required to perform mathematical computations in your everyday life, whether it’s calculating your monthly budget, or making use of fractions in your cooking?

Spatial: Spatial skills are the ability to manipulate three-dimensional objects, flipping or rotating them to figure out the problem.

Logic: You don’t have to be a great detective to need good logic. It’s important to develop your ability to think things through, learn about cause and effect. In this test, your ability to understand and follow rules is measured.

Pattern Recognition: Can you see some kind of order in even your own chaotic environment? Then this part of the test will be easy for you. Even in the chaos, you’ll find patterns in words, pictures, symbols and ideas.

Visualization: This part of the test determines how well you understand visual patterns and use that information for future use. Learning how pieces of information fit together to produce the desired result, actually, helps improve your long-term memory.

Classification: In this part, you’ll be tested on how well you organize collections of items. You must find the similarities and differences between these items or groups of items. You’ll be shown pictures, words, ideas, etc. and questioned about the relationship between them. Good classification skills help you understand the world and how it works.

A score of 90-109 is considered normal or average, while a score of 110-119 is superior intelligence. 120-140 is measured as very superior intelligence, and scores over 140 are genius or near genius. Albert Einstein had an IQ of 160!

The difficulty in using standard IQ tests is that not everyone has been exposed to the same type of environment or experiences. Children who are given these tests and fail to do well are sometimes labeled as slow. This could be disastrous for their future. You must keep in mind that an IQ score does not reflect the value of a person, nor should it be linked to things like a person’s achievement in their career or whether or not they are happy.

So, while it might be fun to take one of these online IQ tests, keep things in perspective. Labels can be dangerous.
