So you are starting a new business but do not have a lot of funds to get it going.  Fear not, there are ways to make it happen on the cheap!

One way to cut costs is to start small. Can you work out of a room in your home, or a garage? You can avoid renting an office or workspace for a while until you start making money, which can help lower initial costs. You might not ever need a brick and mortar office if you start an online business or store. Get creative and consider as many possibilities and options as you can so your business idea will work.

Another method you can try is to figure out a way to do the work by yourself in the beginning. This is not a bad way to start, because you will want to know every aspect of how your business runs, so you will want to work every job yourself to see where all the strengths are, and where you can improve on any weak areas. This can give you vital information you will need to potentially lower costs, improve productivity and increase the amount of money you can make.

When you start making money you can hire some employees to help you. It will also make it easier when you have to train employees, because you will understand all the requirements of every job your business must perform to stay in business and how they interact with each other, because you will have worked them all yourself.

Be certain to keep an open mind during the business planning and start-up cost phase. Keep talking to other small business people or a mentor who might have suggestions for starting small and less expensively. Also remember that the start-up costs will be offset by the revenue that your business will generate, so over time you will break even and then begin to make money from the business.

So let's say that, after analyzing the market, you come to the conclusion that your idea will sell like hotcakes. But perhaps one factor that is standing in your way is high start-up costs.

Start-up costs include things like paying for a place to work out of, buying all the initial equipment, furniture, and tools necessary for the business to operate, possibly legal fees and consultation fees, licensing fees, communication fees for telephone and Internet services, taxes, buying raw materials if you plan to manufacture a product, and marketing your new business venture. When you start adding it all up, it can become a little daunting.

At this point you might need to ask yourself if there is some way that you can maintain the quality of your potential service or product, yet cut some of the initial costs to start. This is when creativity will come into play. Anyone who is rich can throw money at a problem, but if you have a lack of funds, this will be the impetus you will need to get creative and find other solutions. (Not to mention that people pay big money for creative ideas that lead to solutions to problems--that can be a business in and of itself, if you have a talent for it!) All viable businesses provide a solution to a client or customer's problems. So, by thinking along these lines from the start, you will be helping yourself greatly in the process.

Buying a business can be something of an ordeal. You need to be well-prepared and you need to know what you’re looking for. Probably most importantly, you need to have a set plan for buying a business that is either already up and running or could easily be started with an out-of-the-box set up.

We’ll get to the specifics in just a moment. But it’s important to have a general understanding of the business-purchasing process before taking a nosedive into the more detailed material.

As you already know, a turnkey business is one of the best ways to get started in business. You don’t need all of the planning skills it would take to create a business from the ground up and there is also a limited risk on your part. This means you’ll turn a profit a lot more quickly and you’ll be able to bank off of the previous owner’s abilities and planning skills. Yes, it does sound too good to be true, but you will need to do your part in order for your business to thrive.

In selecting a company to buy, you should keep several things in mind. The “Am I Committed?” chapter is a great place to start in evaluating your own business-mindedness. If you made it to this point, I’m going to assume you passed the test and were happy with your answers to the questions posed in the commitment chapter.

How you go about buying a business will depend largely on the type of company you go for – a franchise or a ready-to-start company. These broad categories will dictate the structure of the remainder of this chapter.

The Existing Business Franchise

This category includes fast-food restaurants and other businesses that are a part of a chain of businesses all overseen by the same company. Individuals are able to buy one or several locations of a business, making it a franchise, offering larger small business opportunities to people everywhere. But just because a business is a franchise does not mean that it is not without its risks. You will still need to treat this business in a professional manner. Even though you are not starting a company from scratch, you still will be laying down a significant amount of money up front, so it will pay for you to do your research and to be prepared for the business transaction you are about to make.

We’ve already covered the legal aspects of obtaining a turnkey business and opening it up under your name, but there are other things you must take care of as well before you can own a business.

How Will You Fund The Purchase?

Most people start their business ventures with a loan from a bank. Of course, securing a loan can be quite an endeavor when you’re starting a business from scratch. You will need to have a detailed business plan and a proven business model. Basically, you need to do everything this side of guaranteeing the loan officer that you will make a profit, meaning the bank will get its money back.

The best way to fund a turnkey business purchase is this same way—a bank loan. However, you are much more likely to be approved for this loan than you would if you were just starting up a business. Why is this exactly? Turnkey businesses have already proven themselves to work. They may have already worked under a different owner or businesses with similar models may have been very successful in the past. A loan officer is much more likely to approve a loan if you are buying a business that is practically guaranteed to be profitable. There’s that word again: guarantee. While there are no real guarantees in business, the more likely you are to turn a profit, the more likely a bank will fund your business venture. It’s as simple as that. Of course, it is always a good idea to have a good understanding of what your responsibilities will be with this new business purchase.

Remember: A buying business does not require the same skill set as starting a business from scratch does, but it does still require some business savvy at least in its most rudimentary form. You do not need to have a business degree but you do need to be able to follow directions and maintain what the previous owner or the turnkey template creator has set out for you. Your new company can only be as good as you allow it to be. You need to ask yourself this difficult question – and answer it honestly.

Am I Dedicated?

Ah, we’ve finally come to the question that really matters the most. After all, you can learn to better manage your money. You can learn the skills you need to run a business. But can you learn to become dedicated? Perhaps. But one thing is certain: It is very difficult to change patterns of behavior once they are set in motion. If you have always been a nonchalant person who will “get to it later” and allows procrastination to run your life, owning a turnkey business will likely not be for you.

Certainly you can work from home and set your own hours, but does that mean you will actually get to the work eventually? Will you set the time aside to get down to business? If you can’t foresee yourself imposing those sorts of boundaries and demands upon yourself, then a turnkey company might not be what you need. You may be the type of person who needs the structured environment that a 9-to-5 job can offer.

Are You Ready To Run Your Own Business?

There are pros and cons involved with all types of businesses, but let me just say up front that there are very few cons when it comes to turnkey businesses. We’ll get to the specific benefits in just a moment, but first, consider something:

Everyone talks about the enormous benefits of working from home and owning your own business. It seems like more and more people these days are calling it quits at the old 9-to-5 office job and getting cozy in their home offices. They set their own hours. They are their own bosses! Clearly, moms that set up their businesses at home choose to be there to work in their most comfortable time, and of course to spend time with kids.

It is important to keep the home business a success.  But how?  With children demanding for mommy’s time, working time is compromised.

Here’s where time management comes in.  It may be common to sneak work hours during the kid’s nap time and sleeping time but is it really enough?

Here are tips on  how to manage time efficiently for the benefit of the moms, the kids, the house and their businesses.

1. Mom’s should identify activities that look like they’re important but they’re not. In other words, time-wasters.  TV time or a little chit chat with fellow gal pals are a bit distracting but can be done at a more convenient time.  These should be eliminated or be managed.

2. Keep a timer.  It comes in handy when informing the child when playtime with mom is already available.  It also helps in keeping track of finished tasks or if one wants to accomplish house chores or work faster.

3. Develop a routine for both household chore and business activity.  Having a good one means smooth-sailing days ahead.  Set limits as to which activities that can and cannot be done.

4. Make shopping and meal prep easy.  Doing a scheduled monthly or weekly shopping will help save time and cash.  Making sure that the list is complete saves a lot rather than making an extra trip to the store every time something is missing.  One dish meals that requires the use of the crock pot is good.

5. Know the things that you need first before going online.  This saves a lot of time rather than surfing aimlessly and go nowhere.  If net searching is such a task, teenage children can be of use or plainly hire a virtual assistant.

6. Group like activities.  If some of the papers need filing or some e-mails need to be responded to, allot time for it to prevent from switching from one task to another.

7. Scrutinize steps being employed to check if it is helping at all or not.

8. It does not cost a fortune and it helps make the job done quicker.  It’s a win-win situation for mommies. Kids and baby sitter!

9. A laptop plus wireless internet connection can come in handy.  Sitting out front or hang out at the park to watch kids play is a big advantage.

Time management is integral to every mom and  is important to succeed in business and fulfill responsibilities for the home and kids as well.

Many people dream of blogging for profit, and this goal is not far beyond the reach of someone with average intelligence, a willingness to work hard, and a basic grasp of blogging technology. However, very few people manage to reap the profits they want from their blog. Most people who attempt to make money with their blogs do not succeed for two reasons.

Often, bloggers have unrealistic expectations of how fast their readership will grow and how much money they will make, and when these expectations are not met the disappointment can crush the desire to continue blogging. The other trap that many bloggers fall into has to do with lack of planning. If you want to turn a profit as a blogger, the key to success is to make a realistic plan and stick with it.

To succeed at blogging for profit, the main thing that you will need is a large readership. The higher your traffic, the more advertisers will agree to pay you. However, cultivating the regular visitors that you will need in order to make a profit isn't easy. As more and more blogs appear each day, having a great idea or a wonderful writing style is no longer enough to get attention.

You need to be able to market your blog effectively. Too many bloggers spend all of their time writing posts and almost no time marketing their project. To be certain, updating as often as you can is a great way to keep your blog high on blogrolls and high in blog search engines like technorati, and once your readers know that you update frequently they will return to your site on a regular basis. However, it does not matter how often you update if nobody is reading your page, so don't skimp on the time that you spend drawing visitors to your site.

To make your dreams of blogging for profit a reality, try decreasing your number of posts and using some of that time to draw new visitors by setting up link exchanges with other bloggers, making contacts in the blog community, and following other established modes of winning traffic. Of course, even if you are a marketing genius or have a really great idea for a blog, success is not going to happen overnight.

Building the kind of readership that blogging for profit requires takes time, and in all likelihood it will be at least several months before you are able to turn much of a profit. Try to stay committed to your blogging project during this initial rough period. To stay motivated, set goals for how often you will update and how many readers you want to attract, and then reward yourself for sticking with your plan.

Freelancing allows you to be your own boss. This means you make your own hours.

Wear what you want. Does your current job have a dress code? How does sitting in your pajamas all day sound; what about just spending the day wearing your favorite pair of worn out jeans and that T-shirt from that unforgettable 1980’s rock concert.  If you are an independent agent, like a freelancer, then you decide the dress code.

Making your own hours does not mean loafing around all day. It means having the self discipline to set aside a certain amount of hours that you work each day. But, as the boss, you get to decide what those hours are. That way you can pick up the kids from school, have lunch with the spouse, go to the gym during the day when it’s not so crowded, and never have to make that horrible rush-hour commute.

Being a freelancer means that you get to set your own prices for what your time is worth. No more waiting years for a raise that may never come. As you become more proficient and widen your client base you can double and triple your earnings as you see fit.

Have you ever considered living somewhere else but your job and family obligations keep you stuck in the same place. Freelancing gives you the freedom to take your family, if that applies to you, or just yourself and live wherever you want. As long as you have a phone, a computer and a way to receive mail, you can live at the South Pole or Hawaii and still have a lucrative freelancing career. Your home is your office. You can be sitting in a coffee shop and enjoying a scone with a mocha latte at the same time you are making millions of dollars.

When I was a child my father always told me that “nothing in life is free,” and “if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.” In the case of freelancing the price is minimal. As you will see in future chapters you will need some general items such as a computer, a printer and maybe a fax and scanner. After you have the materials needed to be a freelancer your greatest cost will be your time and effort. How much are you worth? The best part is that you get to decide what your time and effort are worth.

As far as the rule “if it sounds too good to be true it probably is,” here is something to consider. You should not quit your day job immediately and hope to make $10,000 next month. Instead, start slow and work your way to making the money you want. If you are making the equivalent of your full time job and you have too much freelance work to do, then decide to freelance full time and quit your day job. If you work hard this process can happen rather quickly, so don’t be discouraged. The jobs are real. The money is real. The only investment is the amount of time you are willing to invest.

The market for freelancers is growing in leaps and bounds. The future markets are projected to continue to grow at the same rapid rate. This means more fantastic freelance opportunities and greater potential income.

Gyms and fitness clubs have sprung up.  More and more Americans at the rate of 10% per year are booking spas and massage parlors.  With such a growth, offering a massage “delivered to your door” is not such a bad idea.  In fact, it can be a very profitable idea.

For starters, you need not spend on expensive “spa” set-up and equipment because the massage will be done at your client’s home.  Most of your staff will be direct labor; meaning most of them will be a massage therapist.  You will need only one overhead staff, a telephone operator that can double as a therapist scheduler.  You may also choose to do this yourself, to ensure proper handling of customer calls.

When you see a massage parlor that has a map of the feet displayed outside, chances are, their specialty is reflexology.  This type of massage is administered on the feet as it is based on the different reflex points on the feet, which affect major organs of the body.  Light to medium pressure is used in reflexology and that in it relaxes the subject.  This is ideal for tension pain and tiredness and helps your clients’ over-all well being, when done regularly.  Before starting the reflexology, throw in a shoulder or head massage while soaking the feet in warm water for more relaxing session.  Without the soak, charge $40/hour and throw in another $5 for the foot soak.

If you’ve been looking for a work at home job, you’ve no doubt run across ads that claim that you can make money by reading e-mails, answering surveys and trying free samples. The good news is many freelancers make money doing those exact things. The bad news is that this particular industry is rife with scammers. If you are interested in getting involved with GPT programs, you’ll have to do your homework and take special precautions to protect yourself and your computer.

It should be noted that very few people make full time income from GPT programs. Like mystery shopping, GPT should be used as a supplemental income source at best. For many freelancers, the GPT programs are a fun and easy way to earn some extra money when they need it. People who have experience with the programs recommend that you never rely on GPT to pay your monthly bills. But they can be a perfect solution to earn money for a special occasion or holiday shopping.

Just what are GPT programs? They fall into three basic categories: get paid to read e-mail, get paid to fill out surveys and get paid to try products. Each type has its own pros and cons. Before you start any GPT program, you should take some steps to protect your personal information. You will be required to give your personal information for many of these programs and the less you actually say about yourself the better.

To start you should register a separate e-mail address for your GPT purposes. Many programs can result in a lot of spam mail, so you’ll want to keep your main e-mail address separate. Getting paid to fill out surveys works in a similar way. You will sign up for a survey program and then fill out some personal information. Depending on the company, you will get paid per survey, or completing surveys will earn you points that can later be redeemed. Just as with get paid to read e-mail programs, do research on survey companies before you sign up. There are hundreds out there but only a handful are worth the time and effort.

Finally there are get paid to try products programs. These programs pay significantly more than the other GPT programs. However, you will be required to pay anywhere from $1 to $10 to try the products. When you use these kinds of programs, you have to be careful to take complete records of what you will be receiving and when you need to cancel service or return the item. Most of the time you will be registered for recurring billing for a monthly service, which can be cancelled within the initial 7 to 14 days. You can call the companies and cancel the service, yet still be paid for signing up for the GPT program.

Remember that GPT programs are a great way to supplement income but are not something to be relied on for monthly bills.

Generally speaking, pay per click websites are informational websites which provide content and information relative to the advertisers on the website in an attempt to entice visitors to click on the advertiser’s links. Pay per click campaigns may also run on commercial websites but when this is the case they are considered to be a secondary form of profit.

Finding advertisers for pay per click websites is often a simple process. This process is usually simplified by the fact that the advertiser is not paying the website owner for just placing the ad on the website. The advertiser pays the website owner when visitors click through the link to his website. This lowers the risk for the advertiser by ensuring he is only paying for visitors who actually enter his website.

There are many free programs available, where relevant advertisements are served to websites. Google AdSense is one example of this type of program. In this program, websites are evaluated for content and relevant advertisements are placed on the website each time it is viewed. Some of these advertisements may pay per impression meaning the website owner generates revenue each time the advertisement is displayed but the majority of these advertisements are pay per click meaning the revenue is generated when a user clicks on these links.

There are also other programs available which operate essentially as link exchanges.
