Introduction to Home Business IT
Modern information technology has also made communications cheaper, faster and more efficient than ever. Messages that not long ago might have taken an hour and several dollars to deliver can be delivered in a fraction of a second and cost next to nothing.
Despite the incredible (and increasing) speeds at which information is processed, stored and transmitted - and despite warnings you've doubtless received from media and industry about keeping up with technology that changes on a daily basis lest you be left behind - the truth is, you don't need the "latest and greatest" technology for your business - unless you're Pixar Studios, since 3-d graphics and animation actually does require considerable processing power. Otherwise, last year's equipment will very likely serve just fine - and you'll be able to get it for next to nothing!
So, if you're attempting to start a business on a shoestring, and your I.T. budget is on the light side - no worries! Read on, and find out how you can have a champagne-and-caviar I.T. system on a beer-and-pretzels budget!
When people hear the words "Information Technology," the first things that come to mind are computers and the Internet. It may also bring up words like "network," "intranet," "server," "firewall," "security," as well as more arcane expressions such as "router," "T-1," "Ethernet," or the mysterious and exotic-sounding "VoIP" (pronounced "voyp").
In
fact, information technology is all of these things, and more. It's
hardly new, however. Information technology is as old as the brain
itself, if you think of the brain as an information processor. As far
as I.T. being a science, even that goes back as far as the earliest
attempts to communicate and store information. See Histoy of IT in
contents on right.
And that is essentially what information technology is: the communication and storage of information, along with the ability to process and make use of the information stored. In this section online , we'll begin with a brief history of I.T., what it comprises today, and the different major types of I.T. systems available today.
Setting Your Home Office Up Right The First Time
Before you start working in your home office, you will want to get it
set up in the most convenient way possible right from the start. Before
connecting all of your equipment to your computer and putting furniture
in place, put the floor plan on paper. The main reason you want to take
the time to do it right the first time is once you open your business
you are not going to have the time to do it over again.
There is an old adage that it takes less time to do it right than it
does to do it over and that is certainly true with arranging your home
office. Any time you tear apart the office and move everything around,
you not only spend the time on the project, but you also will be
closing your business for whatever time it takes to complete. If
everything is already in the office, whatever you can, pick it up and
move it out and get ready to lay out the office for convenience and
productivity and not because that is how it has always been.
First, anything you will need frequently need should be in the office.
If you are going to have spare filing cabinets or storage boxes that
you will need only rarely, they can go into another room or the garage.
The other stuff stays in the office to save time from having to leave
the room to hunt things down, wasting valuable time. If you use a ream
of paper every two or three days, keep one in the office and the rest
in another storage area of the home to keep as much open space as
possible.
Before moving your computer into the room, take a look at where you
plan to put the computer during different times of the day. The sun
coming through a window will create glare on the monitor screen, so you
may have to find a different position for the computer or buy a heavier
curtain for the window. If you count on heat or cooling vents in your
home office, make sure you do not block them when setting up the
office.
Everything you use frequently needs to be positioned conveniently to
reduce the amount of time it takes to find things as well as to limit
the amount of walking you will have to do, which will detract from your
job focus. Speaking of focus, keep any windows in the office behind you
or at least beside you to prevent the desire to look out the window and
daydream instead of getting your work completed. Little distractions
can cause a lot of wasted time as every time you focus somewhere else,
it will take a few more minutes to get your mind back on track.
There is no reason to have one of everything when it comes to office
equipment as that thinking will use up a lot of floor space as well as
a lot of money. Buy only the necessary basics to get started and if you
find you need a piece of equipment later on, you can always buy it and
put it in your office.
